Save Our Men from the Dump Cake!
Why your cookies might just help someone stay sober …
Let’s talk about dump cake.
If you’ve never heard of it, here’s the scoop: you grab a can of fruit, dump it in a pan, cover it with dry cake mix, layer on some butter and toss it in the oven. The result is something like a cobbler, sweet, soft in the middle and crispy on top. It’s simple, comforting, and requires zero baking skills, which is why it's become the go-to dessert here at The Wheelhouse.
Our residents cook their own meals every day, often with donated ingredients. They’re learning discipline, responsibility and how to live clean and sober. And yes, they’re also learning to bake. Sort of.
Our Mangers show their third attempt. Looking good!
That’s where you come in!
Why Sweets Matter in Sobriety
Research shows that sugar plays a bigger role in recovery than most people realize. When people stop using drugs or alcohol, their brain’s reward system goes through withdrawal too. Sweets can actually help with this transition.
Studies have found:
People in early recovery often crave sugar as a way to compensate for the sudden drop in dopamine, a chemical linked to pleasure and reward, according to the NIH.
One study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry found that access to high-sugar foods can reduce drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms in early recovery.
Offering small comforts like desserts can improve mood and even reduce the risk of relapse in residential treatment settings.
So yes, your brownies can make a difference.
Help Us Upgrade from “Dump” to Delicious
We’re calling on home bakers, bakery owners and lovers of sugar everywhere: Save our men from the dump cake!
Here’s how you can help:
Drop off a dozen cookies, brownies, or bars anytime during the week. No need for fancy packaging or perfection, and don’t worry about calling ahead.
Encourage your favorite bakery to donate. We’ll gladly take yesterday’s cupcakes or day-old muffins off their hands.
Host a bake sale and donate the leftovers. It's a sweet way to support men on the path to recovery.
Every treat is a reminder to our residents that someone out there cares. That kind of encouragement, especially when it comes with sprinkles, goes a long way.
A Little Humor, A Lot of Heart
The guys at The Wheelhouse will eat just about anything (especially if it ends in “cake”), but your homemade desserts are a highlight of their week. It brings joy, comfort and joy to days that are often filled with hard emotional work. And while dump cake will always have a place in our hearts (and our fridge), we know there’s something special about a peanut butter cookie baked with love or a brownie with a story behind it.
